Austin, Texas ? Jeff Boschee felt no pain on Monday night.

“My shot felt extremely good. There was a lot of adrenaline running through my body. My thumb didn’t hurt the whole game,” Boschee said after sinking six threes, including two in overtime, in Kansas’ 110-103 victory over Texas at Erwin Center.

He finished with 21 points on 7-of-15 marksmanship, including six threes in 13 tries.

Not bad for a guy who played with a taped left thumb. He sprained the thumb late in Saturday’s home win over Texas Tech.

“It bothers my dribbling some and I’m sure it’ll be sore later, but I feel good right now,” Boschee said of the sprained thumb.

“It’s a big win for us. It’s the kind of game we might have lost in the past. We came to compete the whole night, from start to finish.”

KU had six players finish in double-figure scoring, including Wayne Simien, who scored a career-high 17 points in 19 minutes.

“In the first half, Nick told me I really needed to pick it up,” Simien said of Collison who sat out the final seven minutes of the half with two fouls. “It was the first game of the season one of our big guys was in foul trouble. I just wanted to do my part.”

Other double figure scorers were Drew Gooden (28), Collison (15), Kirk Hinrich (14) and Aaron Miles (10 with a career-high 13 assists).

Stats, facts: Boschee has made at least one three in 23 straight games. … Hinrich missed a free throw in the first half, snapping a streak of 21 consecutive made charities. … Miles, who banked in a three straight on and hit another jumper straight on off the backboard, had a career-high two treys. … Gooden put up a career-high number of shots (23) and was pulled after putting up an ill-advised three with the score tied late. …KU played its first overtime game since DePaul in the 2000 NCAA Tournament. … KU’s string of holding opponents under 100 points was snapped at 406. ..Texas’ 103 points was second most allowed by a Williams team, most since Oklahoma scored 123 in 1989. … Gooden’s 23 shot attempts tie for most in a game by a KU player under Williams. Paul Pierce had 23 against Vanderbilt in 1997. … Texas was the first team to score 100 on KU since Oklahoma in ’89. It’s the ninth time in history a team scored 100 on KU.

Amazing Hinrich: Kansas junior Kirk Hinrich earned a pair of accolades on Monday.

Bright and early Monday morning, the 6-foot-3 guard/small forward, was named Big 12 men’s basketball player of the week in recognition of his 54 points in victories over Kansas State and Texas Tech.

Later, and perhaps more importantly, the scrappy player was deemed “as consistent a defender on the perimeter as we’ve ever had,” by hard-to-please coach Roy Williams, who has coached several standout defenders in 14 seasons at KU.

“Jacque (Vaughn) and Jerod (Haase) were the two best defensive guards I’ve ever had,” Williams said. “Steve Woodberry was the best with strictly the (defensive) principles. He didn’t have the speed and quickness Jacque and Jerod had.

“Kirk combines all of that. He does have quick feet, speed and quickness and understands the principles.

“We need to put Kirk in a different category because he has to play all three positions on the perimeter. Jacque took the point. Jerod took the guy who ran around screens. Kirk adds a new dimension playing all three spots. He may be more well rounded defensively than any guy I’ve coached on the perimeter.”

Of Hinrich winning the player of the week award for the first time in his career, Williams said: “He did have two great games even from a scoring aspect. A lot of times he plays very very well and does not necessarily score. Twenty-six 28 in last two games … he shot a great percentage and played his normal game defensive end. It’s a great honor for him and I think much deserved.”

Gooden dandy: Texas sophomore Royal Ivey is impressed with the maturation of KU’s Drew Gooden.

“Gooden seems like he’s more about the team now and not just about getting his,” Ivey said. “He looks like someone who really wants his team to win a championship.”

Back pain at UT: Texas senior Fredie Williams played despite a sore lower back that “has been killing me.”

He drew a charge late in the first half of last Saturday’s home win versus Colorado. The play aggravated a condition that occurred when he landed on his back after flipping over a Texas A&M player last Wednesday.
