KU German center celebrates 10 years at Sudler House

A reception Wednesday will celebrate the 10 years Kansas University’s Max Kade Center for German-American Studies has spent at its current location.

The center, which is in the Sudler House northwest of Memorial Stadium, moved to the house April 30, 1992. It serves as a library, research center and teaching facility, and provides an apartment for visiting professors.

The reception will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the center.

Area Agency on Aging seeks proposals to receive grants

Jayhawk Area on Aging Inc. is seeking proposals from agencies and organizations in Douglas, Jefferson and Shawnee counties to provide services for seniors.

JAAA will award grants for Title III-D Medication Management services and Title III-E National Family Caregiver Support Program services that include information, assistance, individual counseling/support groups/caregiving training, respite care and supplemental services. The services will be offered from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2003.

JAAA will conduct a training session on completing the proposals. Interested agencies may receive request for proposal forms at the training Feb. 19 at the JAAA office, 1720 S.W. Topeka Blvd., Topeka.

The deadline for submitting RFP forms is March 14.

Wakarusa Valley chess team takes first at tournament

Chess masters are developing at Wakarusa Valley School.

The elementary school’s chess club captured first place in the kindergarten-to-eighth-grade division of a weekend tournament at Blue Valley North High School.

The winning team from Wakarusa Valley was composed entirely of fourth-graders.

Benjamin Harms finished first individually in the tournament, with Roy Wedge coming in sixth. Both earned medals.

Other team members in the competition were Seth Dirks-Ham, Brendan Jackson and Douglas Rawlings.

Jock’s Nitch staff discovers apparent attempted burglary

A leaky roof led to the discovery last week of an attempted burglary at Jock’s Nitch Sporting Goods, 837 Mass.

Lawrence Police were called Thursday after workers found someone had attempted to cut a hole through the roof over a storage area. Some roofing had been torn away, but no entry to the store was made, police said.

Damage was listed at $2,000.

Three suspects arrested on suspicion of drug activity

Three people were arrested Saturday night on suspicion of drug activity after Lawrence Police searched an apartment in the 1600 block of Haskell Avenue.

Patrol officers developed information that led them to obtain a search warrant for the apartment, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. Officers confiscated money, marijuana and crack cocaine, but specific amounts were not released.

The suspects, a 24-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman who lived at the apartment, and a 19-year-old Kansas City, Mo., man, remained Monday in the Douglas County Jail on $4,500 bond each. Charges are pending.

Transient found unconscious wasn’t victim of a crime

A man found last week lying unconscious in the area of Ninth and Tennessee streets was not a crime victim, Lawrence Police said Monday.

The 29-year-old was taken to Kansas University Medical Center Wednesday after doctors first examined him at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Police detectives, however, were able to interview the victim and determined the man’s injuries were not a result of a crime, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

The victim was described by police as a transient. He was in good condition Monday at the Med Center, officials said.
