Third investment seminar to focus on charitable giving

The Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Assn., Brandon Woods Retirement Community and Presbyterian Manor are presenting the third free luncheon seminar in a series of five community programs about investment opportunities and recent tax law changes.

The seminar  “Give It Away or Keep It?”  includes information about charitable and family giving.

It will be Tuesday in the LMH Auditorium, 325 Maine. Lunch will be served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and the seminar will be from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Nancy Goodall, vice president and senior trust officer with Central National Bank, will answer questions about charitable giving.

The seminars are free, but advance registration is requested. For more information, call 749-6134.

Heritage Area Committee to begin gathering support

Federal Appeals Court Judge Deanell Tacha will visit Kansas congressmen during a trip next month to Washington, D.C., to start building support for a Lawrence-based National Heritage Area.

“I’m going to try to get a feel for what they’re interested in … and whether they’re willing to be advocates of this,” said Tacha, chairwoman of the National Heritage Area Committee.

Committee members met Thursday. They’re still trying to decide the focus of the heritage area  although Lawrence’s pre-Civil War history is sure to be included  but say it’s not too early to start lining up support.

The next step: committee members will meet Feb. 27 with the National Park Service to learn about the ideal heritage area application.

Architectural firm donates KU student scholarship

A Kansas City, Mo., architectural firm has donated $10,000 to establish a scholarship at Kansas University.

Berkebile Nelson Immenschuh McDowell Architects Inc., donated the money in memory of R. Bruce Patty, a Kansas University graduate who died in 1998. Patty was principal architect of the terminals at Kansas City International Airport, Bartle Hall in Kansas City and the Truman State Office Building in Jefferson City, Mo.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to students in the KU School of Architecture and Urban Design.
