The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble will perform works by Borodin, Dvorak, Shostakovich and Mendelssohn at 3 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Lied Center.

A preconcert lecture by Dan Politoske, Kansas University professor emeritus in music history, will be at 2 p.m. in the Oldfather Warm-up/Rehearsal Studio. He will be joined by Ken Sillito, artistic director of the chamber ensemble.

The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields was formed in 1959 by a group of 11 musicians with the goal of giving concerts without a conductor. As the repertoire expanded from Baroque works to the music of Mozart, Beethoven and Bartok, a conductor was added.

In 1967, the chamber ensemble was formed as a separate touring group from the larger orchestra. The ensemble tours the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, Australia and Taiwan.
