Faces and places

Mark Wilson joined the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Office on Monday as a planner. Wilson provides information and assistance to developers, the business community and the public regarding city and county planning and development policies and standards.

Wilson has a background in land-use law and environmental planning. He most recently served as a law clerk for Kansas Department of Transportation, enforcing the Kansas Junkyard and Salvage Yard Act.

Wilson received a juris doctorate and a master’s degree in urban planning from Kansas University.

Craig McCollam has joined DataTeam Systems, Lawrence, as director of national sales and marketing. He has 19 years of experience in sales and management. DataTeam operates in 43 states and is a provider of financial administration products and services to the K-12 education market.

Tiffany Corle is a new full-time occupational therapist at Lawrence Therapy Services and its branch office, Baldwin Therapy Services. She specializes in the areas of geriatrics, pediatrics and the treatment of injuries to the hand and upper extremity. Corle received a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from Kansas University.

Kent Fisher, a financial consultant with A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc., 1811 Wakarusa Drive, has qualified for the company’s advanced business-development training program March 10-13 in St. Louis.

The program includes sessions on advanced core products and services, and business management.

As one of the nation’s largest investment firms, A.G. Edwards & Sons and its affiliates encompass more than 7,300 financial consultants in 49 states and the District of Columbia. It also has operations in London.

Two executives for Lawrence-based Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Julian Arredondo, chief financial officer, and Hannes Combest, director of education were designated as Certified Association Executives by the American Society of Association Executives.

To receive certification, applicants must demonstrate accomplishments in association management and complete a comprehensive examination that tests basic competence within the association management profession.

Arredondo oversees corporate marketing and sales efforts, Internet strategy development and the GCSAA Foundation, and has been the association’s CFO since 1993.

Combest, an association employee since 1996, leads the association’s 14-member Education Department, which is responsible for offering more than 200 seminars across the United States. She received a bachelor’s degree from Kansas University and a master’s degree from Baker University.

Foulston Siefkin LLP, Kansas’ largest law firm, announces the expansion of the firm’s Johnson County office. James Logan, retired judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and a former dean of law at Kansas University, has joined the firm as Of Counsel. Samuel Logan, vice president of the Johnson County Bar Assn., has joined the firm as Special Counsel.

James Logan practices in the areas of appellate law, mediation and arbitration, estate planning, business law and taxation. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Kansas University, where he was selected as a Rhodes Scholar.

Samuel Logan practices in the areas of complex litigation/class action, employment and labor, creditor’s rights/bankruptcy, and real estate. He has a juris doctorate from the Kansas University, where he achieved Order of the Coif.

Beth Dickson, a registered occupational therapist, recently attended a course, “Hand Therapy: Critical Thinking in the 21st Century,” in Kansas City, Mo. Dickson works at Neu Physical Therapy Center in Lawrence, where she specializes in treatment of orthopedic conditions of the elbow, forearm, wrist and hand.

Pat Slabaugh was elected to the Board of Directors of Douglas County Bank at its annual meeting. Slabaugh is the bank’s executive vice president and chief operating officer and leads the bank’s business lending department. Slabaugh’s board responsibilities include the Director’s Loan Committee, the Business Development Committee and the Salary and Benefits Committee. He joined the bank in 1983.

The bank has five branches in Lawrence, one in Eudora. It employs 78 people and holds assets of $160 million.

Vincent Ciavardini has been named vice chairman of UMB Financial Corp. and chief executive officer of the newly created UMB Investment Services Group. He oversees the Kansas City, Mo.-based company’s servicing of more than $100 billion in mutual fund assets. The UMB Investment Services Group consists of Sunstone Financial Group Inc. and UMB’s mutual fund related custody and cash-management services.

Ciavardini previously was president and chief operating officer of PFPC Inc., a subsidiary of PNC Financial Services Group.

The Northeast Chapter of the Kansas Society of Land Surveyors recently elected officers for 2002: Thad Fowler, president; Joseph Bowen, vice present; and Joseph Singer, secretary-treasurer.

Fowler is employed by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Bowen, who is serving his second term as vice president for the chapter, works for Kramer Engineering. Singer is manager of Survey, Design/Records and Right of Way for the Engineering Division of the City of Topeka Public Works Department.

Honors and awards

Carol Folkmann, an administrative clerk II in the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Office, was recognized Jan. 30 through the city government’s Lawrence Excellence Awards Program (LEAP).

Folkmann, who joined the city staff two years ago, was recognized for her efforts to support the office during the absence of a co-worker, who has been unable to work for the past several months due to a serious illness.

LEAP, which is administered by employees, accepts award nominations from fellow employees, supervisors or Lawrence residents. Nominations are evaluated based on activities outside the normal responsibility, recognition brought to the city work force, performance of customer service, performance under unusual circumstances or improvement of working conditions.

Douglas County Bank recognized employees for achieving milestones in their years of service during the bank’s annual holiday celebration dinner and dance: Janie Norris, 15 years; Jack Moore, 10 years; Lisa Stuhlman, Lana McKinsey, Jackie Davis and Ross Edwards, five years; and Judy Dinges, Tina Carver, and Janet Kitsmiller, three years.

Sharon Haupt also was honored for seven years of perfect attendance.

Certified Angus Beef has honored its top licensed food service distributors with CAB’s Top Twenty Sales Volume Foodservice Distributor Awards for 2001. SYSCO Food Services Kansas City, Olathe, earned a Silver Club honor for selling more than 2 million pounds certified angus beef.

The Northeast Chapter of the Kansas Society of Land Surveyors has named Thad Fowler as Surveyor of the Year. Fowler was selected for his dedication to the profession, community and the organization. Fowler is a professional land surveyor licensed to practice by the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions. He works for the Kansas Department of Transportation, in its Division of Engineering and Design, Bureau of Right of Way.

Coming events

The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday for Hobby Town, 2108 W. 27th St., Suite H.

Kansas farmers and ranchers will travel Thursday to Topeka for Kansas Farm Bureau’s annual Day at the Statehouse. The event is scheduled to include briefings by House and Senate leaders, a luncheon address by Gov. Bill Graves, committee hearings and one-on-one contact with legislators.

This event will begin at the Capitol Plaza Hotel and move to the Kansas Statehouse. The luncheon will be in the Maner Conference Center in the Capitol Plaza Hotel/Kansas Expocentre complex.

Among legislative leaders slated to address Farm Bureau delegates are Kansas Senate President Dave Kerr, R-Hutchinson; House Speaker Kent Glasscock, R-Manhattan; Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley, D-Topeka; and House Minority Leader Jim Garner, D-Coffeyville. Leaders on the agriculture, environment, tax and transportation committees also are expected to visit with the group.

First State Bank and Trust will sponsor a seminar on Advanced Loan Documentation from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 25 and Feb. 26 at the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Mass.

Tom Bridge, who has 25 years of bank training experience, will be the instructor. He is a staff member of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He has been a lecturer and public speaker, specializing in commercial and real estate loan documentation for 14 years.

A Kansas Trade Leadership Seminar will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at SpringHill Suites in Lawrence.

The event is intended to help take the mystery out of international trade. The seminar is being organized by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and is sponsored by Commerce Bank.

Lt. Gov. Gary Sherrer and U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., are scheduled as speakers.

Others scheduled to speak include Leslie Schweitzer, senior trade adviser for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Bill Morley, trade lobbyist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Bennett Griffin, Griffin Technologies, Lawrence; Albert Neutel, Reuter Organ Co., Lawrence; David McNeill, director of the U.S. Export Assistance Center; and Melissa Birch, an international trade representative from the Kansas Department of Commerce & Housing.

The topics will give participants an overview of the trade process and provide information on tapping into federal and state resources and financing.

The 41st Annual Western Farm Show will be Feb. 23-25 at the American Royal Complex in Kansas City, Mo.

More than 500 exhibits will feature agricultural products and services, covering such areas as equipment accessories; fertilizer and chemicals; vehicles; livestock equipment; buildings; computers and other specialty services.

Tickets are $5 at the door. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free.
