Jazz singers, musicians join for KU concert

The Kansas University Jazz Ensemble I and KU Jazz Singers will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Lied Center.

The Jazz Singers, under the direction of Dan Gailey, associate professor and director of jazz studies, will perform from a repertoire than includes “Don’t Explain” by Herzog and Holiday, “Hot House” by Charlie Parker, “In This Time” by Kerry Marsh, “We Will Meet Again” by Bill Evans and “Yesterdays” by Jerome Kerr.

Jazz Ensemble I will play selections from a repertoire that includes “Celebration Jig” by Bob Brookmeyer, “Hangliding” by Maria Schneider, “Leap of Faith” by Dick Oatts, “Tarwathi” by Chuck Owen and “Teddy the Toad” by Frank Foster.

Admission is $7 for the general public and $5 for students and senior citizens.

Recital features piano, saxophone professors

Kansas University faculty musicians Vince Gnojek and Alice Downs will perform a saxophone and piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall.

The program includes “Sonata” by Alec Wilder, “Two Meditations” by Brent Weaver, “Volio” by Paule Maurice, “Dance Pair” by Norman J. Nelson, “San Antonio” by John Harbison and “Jazz Sonata” by Ramon Ricker.

Gnojek is professor of saxophone and appears extensively as a soloist with orchestras and concert bands. Downs is professor of piano and has performed solo and chamber music recitals throughout the United States and abroad.

The free recital is open to the public.

Composer to perform at Topeka bookstore

Topeka Tim Janis will perform selections from his recent National Public Television special, “Tim Janis: An American Composer in Concert,” at 8 p.m. Saturday at Barnes and Noble, 6130 S.W. 17th St. He also will share stories about his recent public television tour.

The free event is open to the public.
