Stepfather faces charges in alcohol-related fatality

The stepfather of a teen-ager convicted last year of killing a Lawrence woman in a traffic accident after a night of drinking faces charges in Douglas County District Court of providing alcohol to a minor.

Lawrence H. Rieke, 53, Merriam, was not present Tuesday for his scheduled first appearance in court. His attorney, John Ivan, Merriam, appeared before Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel.

Rieke faces six counts of providing liquor to a minor on Sept. 16, 2000.

Rieke’s stepson, Sean Scott, then 16, was involved in a Sept. 16, 2000, traffic collision on Kansas Highway 10 in western Johnson. Felicia Bland, 39, Lawrence, the driver of the other vehicle, was killed.

In August 2001, a Johnson County district judge sentenced Scott to two years of intensive probation after he pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter.

According to testimony and statements in a series of court hearings, Scott spent the night drinking at his brother’s Kansas University fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta, and at The Wheel, 507 W. 14th St.

At The Wheel, Rieke allegedly gave drinks to Scott, according to court statements made in hearings for Scott. The Douglas County charges, however, do not specifically say to whom Rieke allegedly provided alcohol, and Dist. Atty. Christine Kenney wouldn’t elaborate.

Rieke’s next court appearance is 1:30 p.m. Feb. 26 before Chief Judge Robert Fairchild.

Rieke was ordered by Kittel to report to the Douglas County Jail before that date to be booked. He then will be released.
