It didn’t take a fortune-teller or a soothsayer to predict Free State senior Lauren Wright would break the school’s single-season three-point shooting record.

“It’s pretty cool. It really is,” FSHS coach Craig Hershiser said after Wright connected three times from three-point land in Free State’s 45-24 girls basketball victory over Topeka Highland Park on Tuesday at the FSHS gym to eclipse former Firebird Katie Rhodes’ mark of 29 .

“It’s kind of funny,” Hershiser said. “When Katie Rhodes was here over Christmas, I told her her record was going to fall. I told her it was probably going to be her single-game record and her season record. She said, ‘That’s OK.'”

Wright was better than OK, scoring a game-high 13 points to pace the Firebirds. Her record-breaking trey came with 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter off a set shot in the corner.

“It feels pretty good,” Wright said. “It was just another goal for me to go get. I like it (three-point shooting). I work on it a lot.”

Both teams started slowly perhaps hampered by the rare 5:30 tipoff to open a girls-boys doubleheader combining for more turnovers (12) than points (10) in the first quarter. By halftime the two squads combined for 27 points, but also had committed 19 turnovers and hit just nine of 42 shots (21.4 percent).

Then, with Free State clinging to a 26-20 edge with 1:18 remaining in the third quarter, the Firebirds closed with a 19-4 run.

In addition to Wright, Free State also received eight points apiece from senior guard Stacie Garland, senior guard Julie Seidel and junior forward Amber Hinton.

Junior forward Jayme Lisher had four points all from the free-throw line before leaving the game with 5:18 to play in the first half with what was believed to be a broken nose.

The Firebirds (5-8) won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

“They’re all big,” Hershiser said of the win. “We feel good about getting out of there with a win. That’s important for us right now. I think any kind of win at any time helps us.”
