Eudora ? Most youngsters like snow days, but they were a mixed blessing for the Eudora High boys basketball team that was riding a four-game winning streak.

“It was nice to have school off, but it was (bad) to miss the games,” EHS senior forward Wes Hinman said. “We came out a little rusty, I think.”

The Cardinals (9-5, 3-2), playing their first game in 11 days, removed the cobwebs and dispatched of 3A Pleasant Ridge, 57-47, for their fifth straight win.

However, Eudora coach Scott Stein was not pleased with the performance.

“There were various things that we didn’t execute on the offensive end,” Stein said. “I’m glad it was a nonleague game.”

Hinman, who led all scorers with 17 points and added 14 rebounds, was a monster on the backboards from the start, and sophomore point guard Tyler Cleveland, 13 points and five assists, showcased his 12-foot jump shot during a 12-4 first quarter.

The patient Pleasant Ridge offense roared back with an 8-1 run at the beginning of the second quarter. Junior Darren Mathis and senior Kelly Herken both connected from three-point range during the run, bringing the Rams within three at 15-12.

But the Cleveland and Hinman heated up before halftime.

“Cleveland shot well in the first half and there were times that I was happy with him,” Stein said.

The Rams made another run at the beginning of the third quarter, making their first four shot attempts. Eudora junior center Kaleb Niedens made one of his three steals to spark the Cardinal offense. Despite trouble from the free-throw line, Eudora cruised to a comfortable 39-24 lead with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The Cardinals will travel to Baldwin on Friday.

“It (the Baldwin game) is going to be important for the league race and for sub-state seeding,” Stein said. “”We have to get better in every ball game and every game is important.”

Pleasant Ridge girls 53, Eudora 43

Despite a strong first half, the EHS girls fell after the Rams took control with an 11-2, third-quarter run.

EHS senior forward Sarah Katzfey scored a season-high 10 points and season-best seven rebounds, and sophomore center Lauren Kracl came up just short of a triple-double. Kracl finished with eight points, nine assists and 13 rebounds.

“I thought we had a good first half, but we were shut down for a whole quarter,” EHS coach Gretchen Schreiner said.
