Manhattan ? Kirk Hinrich is on fire from three-point land.

“Shooting the ball  I’ve been feeling it for a while now. The basket is really big,” Hinrich, Kansas University’s junior guard, said after tying a career high with 26 points off 4-of-5 three-point shooting in Kansas’ 98-71 victory over Kansas State on Monday night at Bramlage Coliseum.

Hinrich, who hit his first three threes in helping KU blaze to a 51-30 halftime lead, has hit 12 of his last 16 threes over the last four games. He’s made 14 of his last 20 treys over seven games.

Hinrich made all 10 free throws, despite chants of “Harry Potter, Harry Potter” from the stands.

“I’m used to it. I figured it’s all I’ll hear now since Texas A&M,” Hinrich said.

The Aggies’ fans were the first to bellow the chant.

For the game, Hinrich finished six of eight from the field. The Jayhawks hit 56.7 percent of their shots, including eight of 13 threes. Jeff Boschee hit three of six threes. KSU hit eight of 21 shots. Larry Reid (27 points) hit four of seven threes.

“He’s really good,” frosh guard Keith Langford said of Reid. “He’s one of the best players I’ve played against, one of the best in the league.”

T’s: KU coach Roy Williams on Jim Wooldridge’s double technical and ejection with 11:21 left.

“Sometimes things like that will fire you up. I don’t think it’s the reason Jimmy did it,” Williams said, although KSU did cut a 31-point deficit to 83-65 with 6:35 remaining. “I’m sure he had his reasons. I do not think he wanted to get thrown out. I have a great deal of respect for him as a coach. Two straight wins over ranked teams  trying to do it three in a row was difficult.”

KSU had beaten Texas and Oklahoma State leading up to the KU game.

History made: KU’s 98 points were most scored by a team in the series between the in-state rivals. The old high was KU’s 94 points in 1999-00.

“I had no idea it was most points,” Williams said. “Chris Zerbe is mad because he fumbled it out of bounds.”

KU senior Zerbe had a turnover in the final seconds under the hoop. Had he scored it would have marked KU’s third straight 100-point game in league play. KU has never scored 100 points in three straight league games. KU did score 100 against Rider, Texas-San Antonio and Hawaii-Loa in 1990-91.

KU’s 27-point win fell two points shy of KU’s biggest win in Manhattan. KU won by 29 in 1999-00.

Streak lives: KU has won 23 straight games against KSU and 19 straight in Manhattan. KU has won 14 straight in Bramlage Coliseum since it opened.

“Coach said something once about the streak at practice yesterday. In past years it’s been more of an issue,” said senior Jeff Boschee, who went 4-0 at Bramlage in his career. “We came in here with a top-10 team and were not as vulnerable as maybe the past. Coach did not address it too much.”

Stats, facts: KU improved to 162-88 all-time versus KSU. Â KU is 66-43 in Manhattan and 11-0 overall vs. KSU since the first year of the Big 12 in 1996-97. Â Williams is 32-4 versus KSU and 14-0 in Manhattan. Wooldridge is 0-4 against KU. Â Kansas is 20-2 for the first time since the 1997-98 season. The Jayhawks are 9-0 in the league for the first time since the 1970-71 club went 14-0 in league play. Â KU has attained its 13th straight 20-win season. Â KSU’s three technical fouls were the first T’s on a KU foe since Iowa State’s bench had a T this season in Ames, Iowa. Last time an opponent had three T’s in a game was in 1996 against St. Peter’s.
