World Online report: Small fire at Central Junior High under investigation

Douglas County Fire & Medical investigators were trying Monday to determine when and how a fire started in the boiler room at Central Junior High School in Lawrence. Classes weren’t interrupted by the fire.

Deputy Chief Mark Bradford said remnants of the fire were discovered Monday morning in the boiler room by a school janitor, but it was unclear when the fire occurred. It was small and burned itself out without causing any damage, he said.

“We’re investigating the origin and cause,” Bradford said.

Julie Boyle, communications director for Lawrence Public Schools, said the rest of the building was searched but no other damage or safety concerns were discovered.

Boyle said Principal Ted Juneau sent a letter home with students to inform parents of the incident.
