That special gift for your sweetie a special card, candlelight dinner or diamond tennis bracelet may be a big hit on Valentine’s Day, but it also can break your budget.

KU center offers seminar about managing a business

The Kansas University Small Business Development Center is offering a series of seminars for owners of small businesses. The series begins Wednesday with “Starting and Managing Your Own Business.”

The $25 class will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the center, 734 Vt.

Lori Kravets, a center consultant, will cover what it takes to begin a business. Topics will include business planning, financing, marketing, legal issues, licensing, cash flow and profits. The seminar is recommended for new business owners and those considering business ownership.

Society providing seminar for property appraisals

The American Society of Agricultural Appraisers will offer a personal property appraisal seminar March 20-24 in Wichita.

The seminar is designed in accordance with the new minimum qualification criteria for personal property appraisers, which have been adopted by the Appraisal Foundation in Washington, D.C.

It is expected that the new criteria will become the new minimum standards appraisers will be required to meet to do work for professional businesses such as banks, insurance companies, attorneys and various government agencies.

The seminar will cover Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, principles of appraising, methods for estimating value, market research and analysis, methods for adjusting comparable properties and appraisal report writing.

Credit may be earned leading to an Appraisal Qualification Board Qualified Appraiser designation.
