Kansas defensive end Dorance Armstrong Jr. (2) comes in to wrap up Iowa State running back David Montgomery (32) during the first quarter on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017 at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa.

Although the Big 12’s coaches determined Kansas junior defensive tackle Daniel Wise belonged on their all-conference first team, neither Wise nor any of his KU teammates received the same distinction when the Associated Press unveiled its all-league selections Friday.

Both defensive end Dorance Armstrong Jr. and linebacker Joe Dineen joined Wise on the AP’s Big 12 second team, as did senior tight end Ben Johnson. Armstrong, Dineen and Johnson also made the coaches’ All-Big 12 second team.

Wise led KU (1-11) in sacks in 2017, with 7.0. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound tackle from Lewisville, Texas, also was credited with 53 total tackles, 16.0 tackles for loss, a pass breakup, a forced fumble and five quarterback hurries.

Armstrong, a 6-4, 246-pound end from Houston, didn’t meet his Big 12 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year expectations, but recorded 63 total tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, forced three fumbles, recovered a fumble, broke up four passes and accounted for seven QB hurries.

Kansas tight end Ben Johnson (84) hurdles Kansas State defensive back Cre Moore (23) after a catch during the second quarter on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017 at Memorial Stadium.

Dineen led not only Kansas but also the entire Big 12 with 137 total tackles and 25.0 tackles for loss (a new KU single-season record). The redshirt junior linebacker from Lawrence also made 2.5 sacks, forced a fumble, broke up two passes and earned credit for two QB hurries.

In Johnson’s senior season, the tight end from nearby Basehor turned in his most productive year at KU. Johnson caught 30 passes for 363 yards and a touchdown, with his longest reception netting 57 yards.

The 2017 AP All-Big 12 team was selected by a panel of 19 sports writers and sportscasters who regularly cover the league.
