Langston Hughes will be brought to life at a special presentation tied to the Read Across Lawrence program.

Charles Everett Pace, an assistant professor of anthropology and American studies at Centre College in Danville, Ky., will present “A Writer’s Life: On the Road with Langston Hughes,” at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 at Ninth Street Baptist Church, 847 Ohio. Pace will give a first-person interpretation of Hughes, and answer questions about Hughes’ life.

Pace is known for his chautauqua performances as Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington and Malcolm X. While in Lawrence he also will perform for students from Langston Hughes, New York and Pinckney schools and attend an intergenerational book discussion group at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

Following Pace’s free performance, the U.S. Postal Service will provide a second-day cancellation of the Hughes commemorative stamp, which is part of the Black Heritage stamp series. The cancellations are expected to begin at 8:30 p.m.
