IN 1962

James B. Pearson, a Republican attorney from Johnson County, was Gov. John Anderson’s choice to replace the late Andrew F. Schoeppel as a U.S. senator from Kansas. Schoeppel had died in office on Jan. 21. Pearson later was to be returned to office by voters in a regular election.

IN 1902

On Feb. 3, 1902, the Lawrence Journal observed “If the ground hog didn’t see his shadow it was for the same reason that most of us didn’t see ours; too cold for us to go out.”
