The winter sports season is finally underway at Bishop Seabury after its boys basketball team opened play at the end of last week.

Here is a look at Seabury’s basketball teams for the upcoming season:

Boys basketball

After taking third place at the Class 2A state tournament last season, Bishop Seabury’s highest finish in program history, the boys basketball team will rebuild with a new coach and a mostly new varsity rotation.

The Seahawks return senior wing Thomas diZerega, sophomore guard Cobe Green, junior forward Chris Green and sophomore center Luke Hornberger. In the team’s season opener last week, diZerega, the lone returning starter, scored 25 points.

“We will lean on him a lot,” first-year coach Jonathan Raney said of diZerega. “He works so hard, he’s a tough kid and he’s been a great leader.”

Along with the players returning from last year’s rotation, the Seahawks are confident in freshman point guard Zach Bloch.

Even with players in new roles, Raney said he was happy with how his players prepared in the offseason.

“Guys worked really hard on their individual games,” said Raney, who spent three seasons as an assistant at Barstow (Mo.). “Obviously they will have increased roles this season and I think they are looking forward to it and have really put forth the effort early on.”

Seabury (1-0) won its season opener against St. Mary’s and will play Shawnee Mission East (ranked No. 7 in 6A) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the Championship Showdown at SM East.

Girls basketball

Bishop Seabury’s girls basketball team lost its top two scorers from last season, which means the beginning of the season will be important to figure out who will lead the offense.

The Seahawks will be led by sophomore guard Emily Heinz, senior forward Maria Ruiz Dominguez and senior center Allison Eckert. They hope to receive key contributions from newcomer Anna Martello.

“Our team will rely on Emily Heinz a lot this year,” coach Nick Taylor said. “I expect Emily to have a great year for us.”

Taylor, who coached the Seahawks from 2002-08, is back on the sideline for his second consecutive season.

Seabury will open the season with a road game against Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
