KU student to give piano recital Wednesday

Kansas University student Amir Khosrowpour will present a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall.

He will perform “Barcarolle in F-sharp Major, Opus 60” by Frederic Chopin; “Sonata in F Minor, Opus 57 (the ‘Appassionata’)” by Ludwig van Beethoven; and “Gaspard de la Nuit” by Maurice Ravel.

Khosrowpour is a junior from Irvine, Calif., who is studying with KU piano professor Jack Winerock. He will compete in the national Music Teachers National Assn. competition in March and perform the second piano concerto by Lowell Lieberman with the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Symphony Orchestra in May in Los Angeles.

Student works to be displayed in KU gallery

The Kansas University Art and Design Gallery will show the Western Missouri and Northeastern Kansas Annual Scholastic Art Awards Program today through Feb. 14. The awards ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 10 in room 120 in Budig Hall at Kansas University.

Students in seventh through 12th grade from 62 schools in western Missouri and northeastern Kansas participate in the juried show. The winning works will compete later this year alongside entries from throughout the country.

The exhibit and ceremony are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 1 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Sundays; 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays; 8:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursdays; and 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Fridays.

KU musicians picked for intercollegiate band

Six Kansas University band students have been selected to perform with the Kansas Intercollegiate Band at the Kansas Music Educators Assn. convention Feb. 22 in Century II Concert Hall in Wichita. The performance is at 3:30 p.m.

The students are Rebecca Harris, flute; Kellie Lankford, flute; Elizabeth Baddeley, clarinet; Patty Meseraull, clarinet; Carly Sundvold, clarinet; and Chris Wade, percussion.

Lawrence photographer has solo show in KC

Kansas City, Mo. Lawrence photographer Mary Tuven has a solo exhibition of her works in the mezzanine gallery at the Lyric Theatre, 11th and Central streets.

The title of the exhibit, “No Strings Attached,” refers to Tuven’s role as violinist with the Kansas City Symphony, which performs at the Lyric Theatre.

Two of her works “Doorways to the Past” and “Love, Italian Style” have been accepted into a national juried show at the Octagon Center for the Arts in Ames, Iowa. The show opens Friday.

Saxophone student receives recognition

Jeff Timmons, a Kansas University senior in saxophone performance, has won the 33rd Annual T. Gordon Parks Memorial Concerto Competition for Woodwinds and Brass, which is sponsored by the Arapahoe Philharmonic Orchestra of Denver. Timmons is a student of KU professor Vince Gnojek.

Timmons received a cash award and an opportunity to perform “Concertino de Camera” by Jacques Ibert with the orchestra on March 22.

Last year, he was named Best Classical Soloist by Down Beat magazine for his performance on the alto saxophone.
