Mariners’ Guillen agrees to $1.4 million contract

Seattle Carlos Guillen agreed to a $1.4 million, one-year contract with the Seattle Mariners on Friday. Guillen, 26, finished the 2001 season with a career-high .980 fielding percentage in 140 games at shortstop.

A switch-hitter, he batted .259 .243 from the right side and .295 from the left with 53 RBIs. With the bases loaded, his batting average was .375.

Guillen replaced All-Star shortstop Alex Rodriguez, who left Seattle after the 2000 season to sign a record $252 million, 10-year contract with the Texas Rangers.

Batista, Arizona agree

Phoenix Miguel Batista, who helped pitch the Arizona Diamondbacks to a World Series championship last season, agreed Friday to a $5.8 million, two-year contract. Batista gets a $250,000 signing bonus, $2 million in 2002 and $3.25 million in 2003.

A’s sign Jeremy Giambi

Oakland, Calif. Outfielder Jeremy Giambi and the Oakland Athletics agreed Friday to a $1,065,000, one-year contract, avoiding an arbitration hearing. Giambi, who made $282,500 last season, had asked for $1.4 million and the A’s had offered $800,000.

Giants sign Martinez

San Francisco Infielder Ramon Martinez agreed to a one-year deal with the San Francisco Giants for $775,000 on Friday, more than doubling his 2001 salary. Martinez, who hit .253 with five homers and 37 RBIs in 128 games last season, made $315,000 in 2001. By signing, Martinez avoided an arbitration hearing.

Tigers claim Monroe

Detroit The Tigers claimed outfielder Craig Monroe off waivers from the Texas Rangers on Friday. Left-hander Matt Perisho was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Monroe.
