Diana Ross arrested on drunken driving citation

Tucson, Ariz. — Singer Diana Ross was arrested early Monday on suspicion of drunken driving, police said.

A breath test showed the pop diva with a blood-alcohol level of 0.20 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, Tucson police Sgt. Judy Altieri said.

Police pulled Ross over after someone alerted them to a swerving vehicle, Altieri said. She added that the arresting officer said Ross was polite and cooperative.

Ross, 58, received misdemeanor citations for driving under the influence; driving with a blood-alcohol content over 0.08; and extreme DUI, or having a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.15 percent. Her initial court appearance was set for Jan. 13.

After arresting Ross, police gave her a ride to where she was staying, Altieri said.

Ross entered a Malibu, Calif., drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in May to deal with what her publicist at the time said were personal issues.

Sir Ridley, meet Sir Alan

London — New Year’s Eve proved a good knight for the movies, as actor Alan Bates and director Ridley Scott received knighthoods Tuesday from Queen Elizabeth II.

British-born Scott, 65 — director of celluloid spectaculars including “Alien,” “Blade Runner” and the quintuple Academy Award winner “Gladiator” — was honored for services to film-making.

Bates, 68, burst onto the London stage in John Osborne’s “Look Back in Anger” in 1956 and went on to become one of the country’s biggest stars. He won a Tony award this year for his role in “Fortune’s Fool” on Broadway and recently appeared in the films “Gosford Park” and “Evelyn.”

Rowling rolling in money

London — The money keeps rolling in for “Harry Potter” creator J.K. Rowling, who was far ahead of the pack as Britain’s highest-earning woman.

The author reportedly raked in $77 million this year, nearly doubling the $43 million earned by Madonna, who came in second place in a survey in The Mail on Sunday newspaper.

Rounding out the top 10 were investment banker Robin Saunders, “Weakest Link” host Anne Robinson, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, author Jackie Collins, rock wife Sharon Osbourne, airline executive Barbara Cassani, pop star Kylie Minogue and “Frasier” co-star Jane Leeves.

He’s a believer

Las Vegas — After Neil Diamond went to see the animated hit “Shrek,” he heard a group of giggling youngsters singing “I’m a Believer” in the lobby of the theater.

“I couldn’t resist. I went over and joined in, and we just sang the song together,” Diamond said. “They had no idea that I had written it, or who I was. I was just some weird guy who wanted to join in on the singing.”
