KU fans show presence at California challenge

Kansas University: Resident lauded for work with foreign students

A Lawrence man who has given many hours to helping international students feel at home was honored recently at Kansas University.

Lanny Maddux of the Lawrence Friendship Family Program was inducted Nov. 19 as an honorary member of Phi Beta Delta, an honor society for international scholars.

Two years ago, Maddux started a project for international students who arrive before the start of the official KU orientation. He enlists families to pick up students at the airport and take them home until orientation housing is available.

Government: City commission plans year wrap-up session

Lawrence city commissioners won’t meet in their usual Tuesday-night session this week, because Tuesday is New Year’s Eve.

Instead, they’ll conduct a year-end wrap-up session at 3 p.m. Monday at City Hall.

Commissioners will discuss the 2003 session of the Legislature, consider cuts to the 2003 budget and further discuss use of the Carnegie Library as a shelter for the homeless.

Crime: Information theft may affect TRICARE users

An office break-in in Phoenix could affect Lawrence-area residents who use the military health plan TRICARE, according to Fort Leavenworth.

Computer equipment and data files that contained personal information about TRICARE beneficiaries were taken in the Dec. 14 theft. The company is sending letters to affected users.
