Doris Lorene Powell

Mrs. Powell died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at a hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

She was born March 2, 1920, in Stanberry, Mo., the daughter of Phillip Chester and Mary Ella (Moore) Walker.

She moved in 1937 to Lawrence from Springfield, Mo.

Mrs. Powell worked at Menorah Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., and Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was then a cook manager for Wakarusa Valley School until she retired in 1990. She moved to Guthrie Center in March 1996.

She was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church.

She married Bradford Hayes Powell on Oct. 23, 1949, in Lawrence. He died in 1975.

Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Bascom, Guthrie Center; a son, Kirk Powell, Lincoln, Neb.; three brothers, Samuel Walker, Palisade, Colo., Wesley Walker, Fort Smith, Ark., and Norman Walker, Tonganoxie; a sister, Eva Kelso, Cincinnati; and six grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

The family suggests memorials to Seventh Day Adventist Church, sent in care of the funeral home.
