Russell Essman, Oskaloosa, has been selected for a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration internship. He will work for a year in the hydrographic shipwreck survey division of the administration.

He will research surveys done on navigational hazards. The information will be entered into a database to be used for mapping possible survey sites and supporting the division’s Internet site.

Essman, a student at Kansas State University at Salina, is the son of Bryan and Janet Essman, Oskaloosa.

Daisey Deay, Baldwin, will celebrate her 90th birthday with a reception from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 5 at The Lodge, 502 Ames in Baldwin. Her daughters Arylis Neal, Lima, Ohio, and Alice Rockhold, Baldwin, will be hosts for the celebration. She requests no gifts.

Stacy Lee Kaufman, son of Jimmie and Opal Kaufman, Eudora, graduated Dec. 14 from Kansas State University. She received a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

Assistant Fire Chief Larry Brizendine, Lawrence, will retire Monday from the Kansas Air National Guard Fire Department in Topeka after 21 years. He will retire as a master sergeant.

A dinner for family and co-workers will be Sunday at the fire station.
