Big 12 Men: Longhorns slip past Princeton

? This one had the look of a playground pickup game.

Not the flashy moves variety with ankle-rolling crossover dribbles and in-your-face dunks. Princeton at Texas was more like the scrawny kid who frustrates the neighborhood bully with an efficient textbook attack.

Princeton wasn’t quite scrappy enough, however, as the 10th-ranked Longhorns escaped with a 57-54 victory Sunday.

“We had them right where we wanted them,” Princeton coach John Thompson said. “I thought we’d have the opportunity to win at the end.”

Instead, Texas (7-2) prevailed on Chris Ogden’s go-ahead 3-pointer and T.J. Ford’s four free throws over the final 21 seconds.

Put in the game late as a scoring spark, Ogden swished his only basket from deep in the right corner to put Texas up 51-48 with 3:57 left.

Ogden ignored the play called by coach Rick Barnes that was supposed to go to Ford.

“Someone set a good pick for me,” Ogden said. “I just let it fly.”

Princeton (3-5) missed a chance to tie it at 53 when Kyle Wente got fouled as he made a backdoor layup but missed the free throw. Ford grabbed the long rebound and iced the game from the foul line.

Princeton had the ball with 6 seconds left and one chance to tie but Ed Persia was off-line on a desperation 3-pointer.

“I got a good look at it,” Persia said. “It just didn’t come off right.”

Oregon State's Jimmie Haywood, left, and Kansas State's Quentin Buchanan go after a loose ball. The Wildcats won, 90-72, on Sunday in Manhattan.

Brandon Mouton led Texas with 21 points and Ford added 10.

Wente had 14 points and Spencer Gloger added 11 for Princeton.

The Longhorns went 18-of-22 from the foul line and outrebounded Princeton 39-22.

Texas A&M 107, Louisiana-Monroe 66

College Station, Texas — Bernard King scored 17 points and took the bench with 15 minutes remaining as Texas A&M rolled past Louisiana-Monroe. Texas A&M (6-2) used a 3-pointer by Kevin Turner with three minutes remaining to become the first team to score 100 points in the five years A&M has played at Reed Arena. Turner finished with 15 points. Louisiana Monroe (2-5) was led by Larry Parker and Kirby Lemons with 14 points each.

Kansas State 90, Oregon State 72

Manhattan — Gilson DeJesus had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Matt Siebrandt also scored 21 to lead Kansas State over Oregon State. Kansas State (6-4) survived a second-half rally for its fourth straight win. The streak is the longest in Jim Wooldridge’s three years as coach and the best since 1999, when the Wildcats won five straight. DeJesus made all seven of his field goals, including six 3-pointers, while Siebrandt was 8-of-10 from the floor.

Iowa State 76, Drake 55

Ames, Iowa — Jake Sullivan scored 17 points and held Drake’s Luke McDonald in check with solid defense as Iowa State beat the Bulldogs. McDonald, Drake’s No. 2 scorer with a 15.2 average and the team’s best outside shooter, was held to eight points on 2-for-11 shooting.
