Four area seniors Shrine-Bowl bound

Lawrence High’s Brandon McAnderson and Derrick Newman, Free State’s Bijai Jones and Eudora’s Andrew Pyle have all been selected to play for the East team in next year’s Shrine Bowl.

McAnderson, who has orally committed to attend Kansas University, had 236 carries for 1,789 yards this season, including 26 touchdowns. The 6-1, 215-pound senior was a first-team All-Sunflower League selection at both running back and linebacker for the second straight year.

Jones was a first-team All-Sunflower league choice at wide receiver. The 6-5, 195-pound senior caught 36 passes for 545 yards to go along with six touchdowns.

Newman, a 6-4, 270-pound tackle, joined McAnderson as the only players to receive first-team offensive and defensive All-Sunflower league honors.

Pyle became only the third running back in Kansas history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in consecutive seasons, when he piled up 2,057 yards this season. With nearly 4,400 career yards, the All-Frontier League senior’s stats speak for themselves.

The 2003 all-star high school football game is scheduled for July 26 at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium.
