The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department is offering walk-in flu shots at its clinic, 200 Maine.

Community: Variety show to benefit Tenants to Homeowners

The variety show Three Minutes or Less will raise money for Tenants to Homeowners Inc. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Liberty Hall.

The show’s acts, which last fewer than three minutes, include everything from high-brow entertainment to the ridiculous. Past acts have included poetry performers, divas, dancers tapping with trash can lids and a tuxedoed gentleman making bird calls. The show also features bluegrass, folk, jazz and percussion music.

Tickets are $5. Proceeds will help the organization provide affordable housing in Lawrence and administer loans to low-income buyers.

For more information or to buy tickets, call Rebecca Buford at 842-5494.

Giving: Charities seek old cars

Both the American Lung Assn. of Kansas and the National Kidney Foundation of Kansas and Western Missouri are asking Kansans to donate used cars for charity.

Cars don’t have to run, but do have to have a clear title. Donors will get a receipt after donating the car for tax purposes. According to Internal Revenue Service guidelines, the fair market value of the car is a tax-deductible contribution.

Cars will be auctioned off or sold for parts, with proceeds going to programs that improve health.

To donate a car, call 1-800-577-LUNG (5864) for the lung association, or 1-800-488-CARS (2277) for the kidney foundation. The Web sites www.kslung.org and www.kidney.org also provide more information.

Government: Hearings to address water quality standards

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will conduct several public hearings on Kansas water quality standards. The Clean Water Act requires states to review water quality standards once every three years.

Public meetings will address bacteria, pollutants, site specific criteria and nutrients and encourage public comment on modifications to water standards.

Area meetings will be 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Little Theater of Kansas State University Student Union, 17th and Anderson in Manhattan, and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday at Johnson County Community College, building GEB, Rm. 233, 12345 College Blvd., Overland Park.
