The city commission approved new higher water rates, due to take effect in January and show up on the February bills in Lawrence.

Pioneering anthropologist Margaret Mead accepted the position as a member of the national honorary board of Save the Tallgrass Prairie Federation headed by attorney Charles Stough of Lawrence.

IN 1902

From the Lawrence Daily World of Dec. 15, 1902: “To provide for the treatment of inebriates such as we have here would be on the line of higher ground on prohibition. We have many topers who need treatment and the state ought to look after them. At first, drinking is a habit but drunkenness is a disease and there should be regular treatment provided for its cure. Many brilliant lives are ruined, here and elsewhere, and families are destroyed because of this disease.”
