Ottawa thwarts Nebraska power in 2OT

? Lee Baldwin and Ross Thompson each scored 20 points, helping Ottawa High (3-1) collect a 75-73 double-overtime victory against McCook, Neb., on Friday at the Goodland Tournament.

McCook is ranked No. 2 in Nebraska Class B – comparable in school size to Class 4A Ottawa – and Braves coach David Grover said the allure of playing top talent from a different region helped his squad adapt to state-caliber competition.

âÂÂItâÂÂs a long way, but itâÂÂs a chance to see a really great program,â Grover said. âÂÂAs a coach all it does is make you anxious to see if we can take advantage and come away with the championship.âÂÂ

McCook had won the last four Goodland Tournament titles and seven of the last eight, and Grover said that was a testament to the Nebraska schoolâÂÂs tradition of excellence.

âÂÂThey really have a great program,â Grover said. âÂÂWhen we hit March and look back on our significant wins, this will be one of them.âÂÂ

Ottawa, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, will play the winner of Friday nightâÂÂs Goodland-Burlington, Colo., match at 7 p.m. Mountain time today.
