Knife, fight, drug incidents result in school suspensions

Two high school and two junior high students were each suspended Wednesday for at least five days for their parts in separate incidents.

A seventh-grade boy at West Junior High School will miss seven days of school — covering all classes until the Dec. 20 holiday break — for having a camping knife in his backpack at school.

The student apparently showed the knife to friends Tuesday. West administrators learned about the knife Wednesday and issued the suspension.

An eighth-grade boy at South Junior High School was suspended five days for pushing and hitting a female student while waiting for a bus Tuesday after dismissal of classes.

At Free State High School, two students were suspended for fighting. A 10th-grade girl and a 10th-grade boy each received a five-day suspension for separate altercations.

The female scuffled with another girl in the high school’s parking lot. No one was injured.

The boy tangled with a student in the Free State commons area. The suspended student took a swing at a classmate with a pencil in his hand. The pencil grazed the student’s chest but didn’t cause serious injury, school officials said.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, a Free State junior was suspended for one day for allegedly possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia last week.

Lawrence Police were involved in all five incidents..
