Big 12 Women: New Mexico stuns No. 17 Texas, 77-70

? Jordan Adams had season highs of 22 points and five blocks to lead New Mexico to a 77-70 victory Saturday over No. 17 Texas.

Adams was matched up for much of the game against high-scoring Stacy Stephens. She didn’t score until 3:15 remained in the first half, but finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

The Lobos (5-1), who earned the school’s first at-large invitation to the NCAA Tournament last season, hoped to gain some national recognition with the win over the Longhorns (2-2).

The Lobos came into the game 4-14 against Top-25 opponents all time. Last season, the Lobos’ NCAA Tournament hopes were boosted by a win in the Pit over then-No. 8 Texas Tech.

Texas, with five 3-pointers in the first half, took a 38-34 lead into the break, but the Lobos extended their perimeter defense and used an 11-2 run to take a 51-47 lead with 11:26 left.

With 11,484 fans cheering, New Mexico took its biggest lead of the game at 72-62 with 1:21 left, and the Lobos hit nine of 10 free throws down the stretch.

Both of Texas’ losses this season have come against Mountain West Conference opponents. Brigham Young beat Texas 79-63 in both teams’ season opener Nov. 22.

No. 7 Kansas State 60, Weber State 36

Manhattan – Kendra Wecker had 18 points and seven rebounds as No. 7 Kansas State won its fifth straight Commerce Bank Classic championship.

Laurie Koehn added 13 points and Nicole Ohlde had 10 to help Kansas State (8-1) to its seventh straight home victory of the season. Julie Gjertsen led Weber State (2-3) with 20 points, and Crystal Howe had 10 rebounds.

Weber State took an 11-10 lead, but Koehn hit two straight 3-pointers for Kansas State to spark a 22-1 run that gave the Wildcats a 32-12 lead at halftime. Kansas State held Weber State without a field goal for the final 10 minutes of the first half.

Kansas State outscored Weber State 28-24 in the second half.

Austin Peay 66, Missouri 53

Columbia, Mo. – Brooke Armistead scored 17 points and Gerlonda Hardin had a double-double as Austin Peay defeated Missouri in the championship game of the Unilever Tiger Classic.

Armistead made just 3-of-12 shots but added 11-of-12 free throws to go with six rebounds. Hardin scored 12 points and had 13 rebounds. Paige Smith scored 15 points and Cassandra Peek had 11 for Austin Peay (4-1).

Missouri (3-3) pulled within 58-48 with 1:59 left after being down as much as 18 earlier in the second half. But Austin Peay made 8-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes to seal the game.

Evan Unrau scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds for Missouri, which lost in its annual tournament for the first time since 1996.

The Tigers took 30 more shots than Austin Peay but made just 27.8 percent. Austin Peay made 40.5 percent from the field and 28-of-36 from the free-throw line.
