Sunny skies expected for Lawrence area

That wispy white stuff you may have seen falling this morning is about all of this week’s winter storms Lawrence will get, says an area forecaster.

“It looks like the sun will be breaking out after awhile. If it hasn’t, it will be shortly,” said Steve Kays, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Topeka.

While the Lawrence area was spared the snow, southeastern Kansas counties close to the Oklahoma border had up to 7 inches by Wednesday night, closing schools and challenging motorists.

The storm blasted into southwestern Kansas from Oklahoma on Tuesday, dropping at least 4 inches of snow in Liberal before slowly tapering off in western sections and spreading into east-central and southeastern Kansas. In Kingman County, several cities had half a foot of snow. Garden City and Hutchinson reported 3 inches by early Wednesday morning.

Kays said Thursday’s afternoon temperatures in Lawrence should recover up into the 30s, with a light northwest wind.

“Tonight will be clear with temperatures dropping into the teens,” he said. “Friday, it looks like it should be sunny and warmer with highs up into the middle 40s.”

Friday night, will be mostly clear, with lows into the mid 20s.

Warmer weather returns Saturday, with partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 40s, he said.

Sunday will be mostly cloudy, with highs in the upper 30s.

Is all this cold weather unusual?

“There’s been a lot of arctic air working into here lately. It’s a little earlier than normal, but it’s nothing record-setting,” Kay said.

Normal highs are in the mid 40s and lows are in the mid 20s for this time of year, he said.

“So the lows have been a little bit above normal, but the daytime temperatures have been normal,” he said.
