Ottawa man still hospitalized after late-night accident

An Ottawa man remains hospitalized Thursday following a two-car accident that took place Wednesday night in southern Douglas County.

Wesley Berkett, 41, was listed in serious condition late Thursday morning at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

Berkett was involved in a two-car accident about 9 p.m. Wednesday at the at the intersection of U.S. Highways 59 and 56, about 10 miles south of Lawrence.

According to Kansas Highway Patrol reports, the driver of a car heading west on U.S. 56 failed to yield at the intersection at U.S. 59 and collided with a car travelling south.

Five people were involved. Two were transported, including Berkett, who was taken by helicopter to KU Medical Center. Berkett was the only one of the five not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the car, Scott Moran, 31, Ottawa, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released. A passenger, Jeffery Markley, 18, was not injured.

The driver of the second car, Edgar E. Johnson, 82, Ottawa, and his passenger, Mirian Johns, 82, Ottawa, were not injured.
