Top 25 Roundup: Duke keeps UCLA winless

? UCLA didn’t just lose, it dropped to 0-2 for the first time in 41 seasons.

And the Bruins did it in front of John Wooden in the tournament named for the coach who made them a national power.

J.J. Redick scored 20 points, helping sixth-ranked Duke beat the 14th-ranked Bruins 84-73 at the Wooden Tradition in a game pitting two programs with a total of 14 national titles.

Current UCLA coach Steve Lavin gave explanations of the dismal record, pointing to 2-2 starts last season and in 1996-97, both teams that wound up in the NCAA regionals.

“The goal is to go undefeated. You have to have that goal,” Lavin said. “Some years you have to be more realistic than others.”

Lavin asked for patience from UCLA fans.

“We’re still a work in progress,” he said. “We have a long way to go. We’ve just got to get better as a team in practice.”

Nick Horvath added 16 points to help Duke improve to 7-1 against the Bruins under coach Mike Krzyzewski.

The Blue Devils (3-0) used a 22-6 burst in the second half to open a 21-point lead. Daniel Ewing started the run with a 3-pointer, and Redick contributed eight points.

Redick made it 65-44 with his fourth 3-pointer of the game. He credited Chris Duhon, with 14 points and eight assists, for finding him when he was open.

UCLA trailed 70-53 when Jason Kapono (19 points) scored nine points to help the Bruins pull within nine.
