Class 4A

Wellington 21, Fort Scott 14

Pittsburg (ap) :quot; Tim Lira has found a formula that works.

Lira ran for one touchdown and threw a halfback pass for another as Wellington beat Fort Scott 21-14 to win its second straight Class 4A state title.

Lira threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Avalos and ran for a 76-yard score in the second quarter as Wellington (12-2) built a 21-0 halftime lead. Lira finished with 100 yards on 20 carries.

Lira used a similar formula to beat the Tigers in last year’s title game, when he ran for more than 100 yards and also threw a 43-yard halfback pass in a 30-8 win.

The Tigers, who didn’t score until the final 10 seconds last year, put up a fight in the second half.

Class 3A

Conway Springs 27, Silver Lake 19

Emporia (ap) :quot; Darren Seiwert rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, as Conway Springs came from behind to beat Silver Lake 27-19 and win its second consecutive Class 3A state title.

Conway Springs trailed 19-14 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Seiwert scored on runs of 18 and 15 yards as the Cardinals (14-0) won their 27th straight game.

For the most part, it was Siewert’s rushing against Silver Lake quarterback Kyle Kruger’s passing.

Seiwert’s 31 carries provided nearly 60 percent of the Cardinals’ 328 yards of total offense. Quarterback Matt Wykes completed only three passes, all to Jake Gerber, including a 24-yard scoring pass in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, Conway Springs held Silver Lake to minus-42 rushing yards, leaving almost all of the offense up to Kruger, who set the state passing record with 3,345 yards this season.

Class 2-1A

Pittsburg Colgan 29, Claflin 8

Hays (ap) :quot; Mark Smith ran for one touchdown and threw for another as Pittsburg Colgan defeated Claflin 29-8 to win the Class 2-1A state title for the third straight year.

Smith broke an 8-8 tie with a 21-yard TD pass to A.J. Cedeno in the second quarter and added a 16-yard touchdown run in the final two minutes.

The Panthers (14-0) have beaten the Wildcats (12-1) each of the last three years after Claflin held the state title from 1997 to 1999.
