Bob, Max enter another year together

No last names are needed when discussing Kansas University’s veteran radio broadcast team.

The play-by-play and analyst duties in football and men’s basketball are handled by “Bob and Max” Bob Davis and Max Falkenstien, now beginning their 19th and 57th seasons respectively at KU.

“I think we’ve done pretty well,” said Davis, also the TV voice of Kansas City Royals baseball. “We’ve had a lot of fun, I know that. We hope to have some more fun.”

KU fans seem to enjoy the familiarity of Bob and Max, who are compatible on and off the air.

“We get along well together. It’s fun to work with Bob. He’s been very good to me,” Falkenstien said. “People seem to like the combination. We try to approach it like every game is not the end of the world. We have some fun along the way.”

Davis came to Kansas from Hays where he broadcast Fort Hays State sports for 16 years. He has been named to the Fort State University Sports Hall of Fame.

“They (games) are very important to the people involved and should be to coaches , players and fans,” Davis said. “We just try to keep things in perspective. We have had some good football teams (at KU) and hope to have more. We’ve had a terrific run in basketball. Max is a KU Hall of Famer and Lawrence High Hall of Famer. He is a pretty special guy here in this area.”

Falkenstien, a member of the Kansas Broadcasters Hall of Fame and winner of the College Football Hall of Fame’s Chris Schenkel Award for long and outstanding merit in broadcasting, is retired, except for his KU gig.

“It’s one year at a time,” Falkenstien said, asked whether he will try for 60 full seasons in the KU booth. “I will not put any deadline on it. I would say it’s unlikely I’d hit 60. People come to me all the time and say, ‘Gosh, don’t ever quit.’ I don’t know … there comes a time you have to say it’s been long enough.”

Davis, meanwhile, has no plans to slow down. Counting his Royals’ assignments, he’s broadcasting year-round.

“Once in a while you get a little weary, but that’s part of the job” Davis said. “If you look at it with a positive attitude, it’s really a lot of fun. You go to a lot of great cities, get to meet a lot of people. Travel is part of the job. You have to handle that. Same for the players, coaches, in baseball the managers. It’s part of the job description.”
