Tuition increase: Where the money goes

Here’s a look at how tuition increases will be spent at Kansas University:

$2.4 million Technology fee, including increased university bandwidth, online classroom resources and personalized student home pages.

$1 million Teaching assistant salary increase. This amount will be increased to $2 million next year.

$750,000 Tuition reimbursement for research assistants.

$250,000 Salary for additional instructors hired for this academic year.

$500,000 Classroom improvements, including two refurbished auditoriums in Wescoe Hall and new tables for graphic design students.

$800,000 Library acquisitions.

$1.5 million Other operating expenses for schools and departments. KU officials say these funds are about 60 percent that of their peer schools.

$150,000 Minority retention programs.

$80,000 International student services, in part to cover additional tracking requirements by Immigration and Naturalization Services.

$170,000 Reserve funds to be allocated later this year. This amount may be higher if enrollment increases.
