Firebirds 4th, LHS 7th

? The Lawrence High girls’ golf team opened its season Thursday at the Olathe North Invitational at Prairie Highlands golf course, taking seventh overall, but found itself behind in-town rival Free State.

The Firebirds tied for fourth place, despite not having any golfers medal. Erin Harrison was the Firebirds’ top golfer for the second straight tournament, followed by Candace Bailey, Ashley Johnson and Kym Scafe.

“We were narrowly behind Olathe East,” said Free State coach Steve Grant. “Not a bad way to open the season.”

The Lions managed one top-10 finisher freshman Sydney Wilson, who shot a 42. Other Lawrence golfers were Whitney Juneau, 50, Kelly Jacob, 57, and Susan Lawhorn, 62.

“We are pretty pleased with way we played,” said Lions coach Mike Lewis. “We’re definitely making strides toward being more competitive. This a good way to start out year.”
