Pirates prevail against Braves

Maddux hard-luck loser in Pittsburgh's 1-0, 12th inning victory

? If it was Greg Maddux’s last start with the Atlanta Braves, at least it was a vintage one. Except for the final score.

Brian Giles’ one-out single off reliever Mike Remlinger broke up a scoreless tie in the 10th and the Pirates, shut out by Maddux for nine innings, beat the Braves 1-0 Wednesday night.

Maddux is unsigned past this year and, should the season be ended by a players’ strike as it was in 1994, this might have been the last of his 321 career starts for the Braves.

“It crossed my mind,” said Maddux, a four-time Cy Young Award winner. “I thought of it, but I really didn’t go past that.”

Maddux, making his longest start of the season, is 9-0 against the Pirates since April 1994 before the last players’ strike but did not figure in the decision. He allowed nine hits in nine innings, striking out one and walking one.

“You hate to waste starts like that,” Chipper Jones said. “We didn’t even really threaten until the top of the 10th. He (Maddux) probably threw his best game of the year and he couldn’t get a win out of it.”

The Pirates hadn’t won a 1-0 game in extra innings since beating Montreal on Aug. 3, 1989.

Mike Williams (2-5), the second of the Pirates’ two relievers after Brian Meadows pitched eight shutout innings, struck out Rafael Furcal with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the 10th to get the victory.

Astros 2, Padres 1

Houston Roy Oswalt won his seventh start in a row, giving up four hits and pitching into the eighth inning as Houston beat San Diego. Oswalt (17-6) hasn’t lost since July 16 and has one no decision since then. He went 7 2â3 innings, striking out six and walking two.

Billy Wagner pitched a perfect ninth for his 30th save in 36th chances, giving him four seasons with at least 30 saves. Wagner, who tied a career best with 39 saves last season, also had at least 30 in 1998 and 1999.

Brewers 5, Cubs 1

Milwaukee Lenny Harris had four hits, including a home run, and Glendon Rusch (7-13) pitched seven strong innings to lead Milwaukee past Chicago.

Playing their fourth consecutive game without Sammy Sosa, the Cubs scored in the first inning but did not get a runner past first base again until the seventh.

Cardinals 9, Reds 2

Cincinnati Garrett Stephenson returned from a three-month layoff by throwing four shutout innings, and pinch-hitter Kerry Robinson had a three-run double as St. Louis beat Cincinnati.

Miguel Cairo made the best defensive play of the game, slamming into the left-field wall to rob Ken Griffey Jr. of a hit. Cairo also had three hits, including an RBI double off Shawn Estes (4-11).

Marlins 7, Mets 3

Miami Charles Johnson drove in three runs, and Florida pitchers helped beat New York in perhaps the final game of the season for both teams.

Johnson’s sacrifice fly put Florida ahead 3-2 in the fourth, and he added a two-run double in the eighth.

Juan Encarnacion hit his 21st homer for Florida, and Armando Almanza (3-2) earned the victory by facing only one batter Roberto Alomar.

Dodgers 1, Diamondbacks 0

Los Angeles Odalis Perez hit his first career home run and scattered five hits in eight innings as Los Angeles beat Arizona.

Perez (11-8) beat the defending World Series champs for the first time in five career decisions, striking out four, walking none and retiring his last 12 batters.

Eric Gagne struck out three in the ninth to break the Dodgers franchise record with his 45th save in 49 chances.

Expos 6, Phillies 3

Philadelphia Tomo Ohka struck out a career-high 11 and Brad Wilkerson drove in three runs as Montreal snapped Philadelphia’s six-game winning streak.

Ohka (12-6) went six innings to win his fourth straight decision. He allowed one run and three hits, walking one.

Giants 9, Rockies 1

Denver Barry Bonds homered for the fourth time in two games, and Russ Ortiz (9-10) allowed four hits in eight innings and drove in two runs as San Francisco beat Colorado.

Jeff Kent homered for the third consecutive game, a solo shot to left off Colorado starter Jason Jennings (15-6) in the first inning. It was his 31st of the season.
