Mussina blanks Boston

Yankees rough up Martinez, extend divison lead

? Fans booed the Boston Red Sox, and it didn’t have anything to do with a possible strike.

Mike Mussina pitched a three-hitter and Bernie Williams hit a three-run homer to help the New York Yankees beat Pedro Martinez and Boston 7-0 Wednesday night.

Yankee pitcher Mike Mussina delivers a pitch during the first inning against the Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston. Mussina got his 16th win Wednesday as New York beat Boston 7-0.

New York shut out the Red Sox for the second straight game.

“There’s no question it’s going to take a big chunk of their heart away from them,” Yankees manager Joe Torre said after Boston lost its final game before the strike deadline.

“I’m sure a lot of people, when they left the ballpark, were wondering if there’s going to be baseball.”

Mussina (16-7), who came within one strike of a perfect game at Fenway last September before finishing with a one-hitter, struck out nine and walked one for his first shutout of the season.

He leads the Yankees in victories, reclaiming the lead from David Wells Tuesday’s winner.

“It’s a relief to know I can still pitch, because sometimes I wondered if I could,” said Mussina, who had lost three of his last five starts. “This is nice. It’s nice to put one of these out there, especially in Boston.”

The Red Sox committed three errors two in the first inning as the Yankees touched Martinez (17-4) for an unearned run.

Martinez gave up three earned runs on five hits and a season-high four walks, striking out nine before leaving down 2-0 with two on and one out in the seventh.

Williams extended his hitting streak to 19 games the longest for the Yankees since he hit in 21 straight in 1993.

Twins 2, Mariners 1

Minneapolis Torii Hunter hit a two-run homer to help Johan Santana (8-8) outpitch Joel Pineiro as Minnesota beat slumping Seattle.

Bret Boone homered for the third-place Mariners, who have lost four of five and 13 of 22 to fall 4 1â2 games behind first-place Oakland in the AL West. If a strike ends the regular season Friday, the Mariners would be out of the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

Eddie Guardado pitched the ninth for his 38th save in 43 chances.

Indians 2, Tigers 1

Cleveland Jim Thome homered twice and C.C. Sabathia pitched seven solid innings as Cleveland beat Detroit.

Thome was 3-for-3 with home runs in the second and sixth innings. Carlos Pena homered for the Tigers.

Travis Fryman, who announced before the game that he will retire at the end of the season, was 0-for-3.

Sabathia (9-10) allowed a run on four hits and four walks, striking out six. It was his first win in three starts.

White Sox 8, Blue Jays 0

Chicago Jon Garland pitched a six-hitter for his first career complete game, and Magglio Ordonez homered twice in what could be Chicago’s final game of the season.

Garland (9-10), making his 56th career start, struck out nine and walked one, allowing just three runners past first base and one past second. He had been 0-4 in seven starts since July 14.

Ordonez hit a three-run homer in the third inning off Steve Parris (5-5) and a two-run homer in the fifth, raising his season total to 31.

Rangers 5, Orioles 3

Arlington, Texas Todd Hollandsworth and Ivan Rodriguez homered to extend Texas’ power surge and lead Texas past Baltimore.

The Rangers have homered in 15 straight games, with 30 homers during that span. They have 185 home runs this season, second in the majors to the New York Yankees (191).

Chan Ho Park (6-6) struck out eight in seven innings to win consecutive decisions for the first time since signing a $65 million, five-year contract with the Rangers last December. He gave up two runs on seven hits.

Devil Rays 8, Angels 5, 10 innings

Anaheim, Calif. Jared Sandberg, hitless in his first four at-bats, drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the 10th inning as Tampa Bay rallied past Anaheim.

Sandberg’s drive just over the glove of Anaheim center fielder Darin Erstad came off Al Levine and followed consecutive singles by Randy Winn and Aubrey Huff, the third hit of the game for each.
