Courthouse struggle leads to arrest

? A distraught man who drove all night from Wisconsin and rushed into the Reno County Law Enforcement Center claiming to have a bomb was detained Wednesday for a mental evaluation, authorities said.

Ten officers struggled to subdue 39-year-old Dale E. McCormick, who had grabbed a bystander by her throat Tuesday afternoon when he stormed into the building yelling and waving a black bag, Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson said.

“At one point there were about six of us on him, and he basically stood us up during the struggle,” Henderson said.

Officers finally were able to carry the combative man to the jail portion of the building, the sheriff said. The bag turned out to contain shaving equipment.

McCormick, of the Reno County town of Sylvia, was booked into the jail on charges of aggravated criminal threats and kidnapping, Henderson said. He was later taken to Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility.

Henderson said Reno County officials first learned about McCormick early Tuesday afternoon, about 90 minutes before he arrived at the law enforcement center.

Belinda McCormick had called Reno County dispatch from Wisconsin to report that her husband threatened to kill her 10-year-old daughter. The wife also said McCormick had bipolar disorder and was “off his medication.”

The wife said McCormick had “battered” the girl Monday night in Wisconsin, then called Tuesday from Emporia saying he was heading back to Wisconsin to kill the girl.
