Authorities investigating deaths in buffalo herd

Tonganoxie  Authorities are investigating whether neglect was involved in the deaths of nine buffalo in Leavenworth County.

The Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Department found several carcasses last week after receiving an anonymous tip about the dead animals near Tonganoxie. Initially authorities investigated because of the health and environmental risks associated with the carcasses.

As deputies walked through the pasture, they discovered the entire herd of 31 buffalo was emaciated. A veterinarian who plans to treat the surviving animals said Tuesday he thought a significant factor in the deaths was an internal parasite but neglect could be involved.

Sheriff’s Maj. David Zoellner said to prove animal neglect, authorities would have to establish the owner intended to harm the animals.
