James R. Thornton

Services for James R. Thornton, 69, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church. Burial with military honors by Alford-Clarke VFW Post No. 852 will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Thornton died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 26, 1933, in Leavenworth, the son of T.D. and Louisa (Martin) Thornton.

Mr. Thornton was raised and attended schools in McLouth. He moved in 1948 to Lawrence and worked for Alvamar and Acme Laundry. He then worked for Lawrence Freight Line until he retired in 1994.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Alford-Clarke VFW Post No. 852, the National Campers and Hikers Assn. Jayhawk Chapter and Voice Club.

He married Martha F. Hill in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Larry, Lawrence; two daughters, Pam Huff and Terri Thornton, both of Lawrence; three sisters, Betty Bower, Janice Luber and Shirley Shockley, all of Lawrence; and three grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will meet with friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Oncology Care Center. They may be sent in care of the funeral home.
