Fairgrounds policies, fees to be reviewed

The community building at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds is proving so popular that its managers say they need new policies to regulate its use.

Douglas County commissioners agreed Monday to form a committee to review fees and policies governing the building and others at the fairgrounds, southeast of 19th and Harper streets.

On the table: Tightening rules for waiving building-rental fees; rescheduling meetings and events to make way for paying groups; charging for groups that fail to clean up their animal waste; and reorganizing “open ride” days to separate barrel racers from leisure horse riders.

“In a way, it’s a good problem to have,” said Jere McElhaney, commission chairman. “The building is being used.”
