Ex-Jayhawk Murphy cut; Rod Jones out for year

Former Kansas University linebacker Chaz Murphy was waived by the Detroit Lions on Monday. Murphy, a free agent, last played for the Jayhawks in 2000.

Meanwhile, ex-Jayhawk Rod Jones, who was expected to start on Washington’s offensive line, is out for the season with an elbow injury.

Jones ruptured a tendon in his elbow in Saturday night’s game at Tampa Bay, and he was placed on injured reserve Monday.

“Some injuries you can play through the season; you can’t with this one,” athletic trainer Dean Kleinschmidt said.

Jones, a six-year veteran, was signed in April as a free agent from St. Louis, where he mostly played tackle. The Redskins tried to convert him to guard, but he struggled during camp and was eventually moved to tackle as a backup to Chris Samuels.
