Politicians play in contest

For about 30 minutes Sunday, Chris Biggs switched from being a political candidate to being a musician.

“It’s a nice stress reliever, that’s for sure,” said Biggs, the Democratic candidate for Kansas attorney general who played his guitar at the Kansas State Fiddling and Picking Championships in South Park.

Democratic attorney general candidate Chris Biggs plays at the Kansas Picking and Fiddling Championships at South Park. He was joined during his performance Sunday by U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore.

Biggs, 43, the Geary County district attorney, said he began playing the guitar and banjo in the eighth grade. Sunday he teamed up for the concert with Scott Tichenor, Lawrence, and Rick Desko, Overland Park. The trio used to perform bluegrass, mountain and country music together on a regular basis.

“We don’t get a chance to get out like that much anymore,” Biggs said.

Joining him on stage for one song was Congressman Dennis Moore, D-Kan., who played his guitar and sang “This Land is Your Land.” Moore also is up for re-election and is a former Johnson County district attorney.

“It must be in the jeans, j-e-a-n-s,” Moore said with a laugh.

Both Biggs and Moore said they were touting their experience over their opponents’. Biggs is up against Republican Phill Kline, and Moore is being challenged by Republican Adam Taff.

Biggs was to meet with Douglas County Democratic Party leaders later Sunday, he said.

“We’re going to talk about how to get the word out,” he said.
