Malicky services

? A memorial service for George Malicky, 97, Baldwin, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Baldwin. A private family burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin.

Mr. Malicky died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at Baldwin Care Center.

He was born Feb. 24, 1905, on a farm near Barneston, Neb., the child of John Malicky and Lizzie (Chadima) Malicky.

Mr. Malicky was a baseball and football player and signed a contract with Connie Mack’s Major League Philadelphia Athletics when he was 18. He played professional baseball for nine years. In addition, he worked in the Texas oil fields and served as the team companies’ player and manager.

He was a member and usher of the First United Methodist Church of Baldwin, and he and his wife were honored as grand marshals of the Maple Leaf Festival Parade in 1997.

Mr. Malicky was an honorary alumnus of Baker University and an honorary member of Delta Tau Delta, whose fraternity house was next door to the family home in Baldwin.

Mr. Malicky married Ethel Reed on Nov. 23, 1932. She died March 20, 2001.

Survivors include a son, Neal Malicky, Lawrence; two daughters, Georgann Raney, Beaumont, Tex., and Joyce Castel, Lawrence; a sister, Gladys Riggs, Houston; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, Baldwin.
