Lawrence school board won’t meet today
The Lawrence school board is taking a breather.
Scott Morgan, board president, said he decided in consultation with Supt. Randy Weseman that the board wouldn’t meet again this month. The next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 9 at district headquarters, 110 McDonald Drive.
Morgan said the board would be better prepared then to consider two important issues: enrollment and budget.
“It will be discussed better if done later,” he said.
The preliminary enrollment count indicated the Lawrence district had about 180 fewer students than a year ago.
A budget cut ordered by Gov. Bill Graves and state funding reductions tied to an enrollment decline will require the board to trim hundreds of thousands of dollars from the 2001-2002 budget or dig deeply into the district’s contingency fund.
