First Christian Church to offer PeaceWays

PeaceWays, a spiritual healing and growth program for adults, is being offered at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky. An informational meeting will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church.

PeaceWays uses supportive small groups to assist individuals in a journey toward a more fulfilling and peaceful life. Topics include overcoming shame and guilt; facing fears that control our lives; and being free to be yourself and to cease the strife of pretending.

The small groups will meet Tuesdays, beginning Tuesday and running through Nov. 19. A retreat will be Sept. 21.

Oompahfest scheduled for Sept. 14 in park

Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center, 2104 W. 15th St., will offer Oompahfest Family Fun Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 14. The event will be on the west side of South Park, 12th and Massachusetts streets.

The festival features the Alpen Spielers Band, games, children’s face painting, a chance to win a cruise on the Rhine River, and German cuisine, including German potato salad, bratwurst, sauerkraut and German chocolate cake.

The event is open to the public. There is no admission charge. Proceeds from the event will benefit the church’s building fund.

First Baptist to ordain missionary Sunday

Carolyn Predmore will be ordained 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive.

Church members and friends are invited to the services. A dinner will follow the ordination at 5:30 p.m. at the church.

Predmore has been a member of First Baptist Church for more than 20 years.

Eudora United Methodist to celebrate promotion

Eudora United Methodist Church, 703 Church, will celebrate Sunday School Promotion at 11:30 a.m. Sunday with a lunch and carnival.

The festivities will include a cake walk, games, prizes and a duck pond.

Unity Church to finish faith traditions series

“What the Hebrew Prophets Said,” the last in a series on the major faith traditions of the world, will be the message Sunday at Unity Church, Ninth Street and Madeline Lane.

Joy and Glenn Friedman and Joanie Levenson will be guest vocalists for the 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. services.

The Fall Alpha Celebration Potluck is 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, 700 Wakarusa Drive. This is an information night to learn more about the Alpha program.

Calvary Temple to hold covered dish supper

A covered dish supper will be 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace. There will be a preaching service after the meal.

The new session of the New Members and Believers class will begin at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9. This is for those wanting to know more about the Assemblies of God. Each person will receive a certificate after the completion of the seven-week session. The course is being taught by Bill Martin.

Reverend to discuss development plans

The Rev. Ron King, newly appointed superintendent of the Five Rivers District, will preach at the Sunday worship services at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. He also will conduct a Special Church Conference to vote on the master plan for the west campus development. The meeting will be at 12:05 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

St. Margaret’s to hold “Sundaes on Sunday”

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St. will hold an ice cream party after the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and the 5:30 p.m. Sunday services at the children’s playground area.

Saint Luke A.M.E. Church, 900 N.Y. St., is having a Men and Women’s Day Celebration at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Motet Singers to be at Trinity Episcopal

The Rev. Lee Block will be the guest celebrant and preacher at the 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday services at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt. The Motet Singers, under the direction of David Grisafe, will present special music at the 10:30 a.m. service.

The contemporary service is at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Grant Clowers as guest clergy. The service will include an instructed Eucharist.

Sunday’s Adult Forum will be a continuation of a video titled “Ground Zero Spirituality.” It is the story of St. Paul’s Chapel and Trinity Church Wall Street and the involvement of its people during events of Sept. 11.

Salvation Army ready to hold “Music Sunday”

The Salvation Army church, 946 N.H., will have its quarterly “Music Sunday” on Sunday. Following Sunday school at 9:30 a.m., the morning worship service at 10:30 a.m. will feature the various musical talents of the congregation. Capt. Kirk Schuetz will deliver the sermon during the service. A covered-dish dinner will be after the worship service.

The Schuetzes are under farewell orders. Their last Sunday will be Sept. 1.

Worden to offer Alpha course

Worden United Methodist Church will offer an Alpha course on Tuesday nights. Registration will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church, 3 miles west of the Baldwin junction at U.S. highway. The course will start Sept. 10.

Alpha is an introduction to the Christian faith and includes an entertaining and thought-provoking presentation on the evening’s topics, followed by small-group discussions of the topic.

First Presbyterian ready to kick off the fall

First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway, is presenting “Kickin’ off the Fall” on Sunday.

Sunday school classes at 9:30 a.m. are beginning their fall topics. The Roundtable Class will offer a study of the book “Reading the Bible and Confessions the Presbyterian Way” by Jack Rogers.

The Rev. Jim Dunkin will lead a class called “Old Testament Characters 101” on Sept. 1. Check the Web site, www.firstpreslawrence.org, for other classes.

Confirmation class for ninth-graders begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Traditional services are held 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sundays.

The fall celebration continues with simple worship at 5 p.m. in the chapel. At 6 p.m., college students are invited to the first of the weekly College Sunday Suppers. The meals are free.

This week also marks the beginning of the fall semester with youth group. All parents and youth in grades 7-12 are invited to the “cook-out carnival” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. The event will feature a moonwalk, snow cones and parent vs. youth relays.
