Cunningham retires after 16 seasons

Philadelphia After 16 seasons in the NFL, Randall Cunningham retired Friday night as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, the team he played for the first 11 years of his career. Cunningham, 39, signed a ceremonial contract with the Eagles before their preseason game against Baltimore. He leaves as the career leader in rushing yards among quarterbacks with 4,928.

Though he never played in a Super Bowl, Cunningham posted numbers worthy of Hall of Fame consideration. He had 29,979 yards passing and 242 touchdowns, including 35 rushing. He also played for Minnesota, Dallas and Baltimore.

Rams end hospitalized after fall, concussion

St. Louis Rams defensive end Leonard Little sustained a concussion after fainting in a restaurant, St. Louis coach Mike Martz said Friday. Little was expected to be released from a hospital today. He won’t play in the preseason finale next week at Kansas City and might not be ready for the season opener Sept. 8 in Denver.

Tyoka Jackson and Damione Lewis will fill in.

Rookie still in hospital

Cleveland, Ohio Cleveland rookie offensive lineman Qasim Mitchell remained hospitalized Friday with a bruised lung following a collision with a teammate during Thursday’s practice. Coach Butch Davis said Friday that the 6-foot-6, 335-pound Mitchell was hurt when he collided with defensive end Courtney Brown near the end of the two-hour workout in Berea, Ohio.
