Mangino tweaks depth chart

When Kansas University released its first updated football depth chart on Aug. 14, there were more than a dozen changes from the original two-deep list printed before full-squad, two-a-day workouts began on Aug. 10.

There were few changes, however, in the depth chart released Friday  the first update since two-a-day practices ended Wednesday.

Two of the three changes involved special teams. Senior quarterback Jonas Weatherbie became the Jayhawks’ third holder on the kicking team after red-shirt freshman quarterback Brian Luke broke his thumb in Wednesday’s scrimmage. Luke had taken over holding duties when senior wide receiver Harrison Hill left the team because of chronic dehydration on Aug. 11.

Luke remains fourth on the depth chart at quarterback behind juniors Zach Dyer, Bill Whittemore and Weatherbie. The 6-foot-5 Californian is expected to miss at least six weeks.

Meanwhile, Coffeyville Community College transfer Andy Coffman is alone at the top of the depth chart at long snapper ahead of Greg Nicks, who had been listed as co-No. 1 on the previous depth chart. KU recruited Coffman, in part, so that Nicks could concentrate on his duties with the offensive line. The senior is No. 1 on the depth chart at center ahead of red-shirt freshman Justin Henry.

The only other change was at running back. Coach Mark Mangino already had announced on Tuesday that junior Reggie Duncan had taken over the starting job at tailback. He had previously been listed as co-No. 1 with red-shirt freshman Clark Green, who has been slowed in recent practices by unspecified injuries.
