Want to take an early peek at Playboy’s “Girls of the Big 12,” featuring three Kansas University students?

But you’ll need to arrive at his store early on Friday.

“Not till tomorrow sir, 10 a.m.,” Osburn told an eager customer Thursday afternoon at his shop, Naughty But Nice, 1741 Mass.

Osburn, who sells lingerie and adult novelties, said he planned to get a jump start on sales of the magazine, which will hit most local magazine racks on Tuesday.

Osburn said he usually doesn’t carry very many copies of Playboy.

“Normally, I’ll sell six to eight issues a month,” he said.

But he wants to cash in on the local interest generated because the “Girls of the Big 12” feature includes three KU students.Those three are Carey Oroke, 22, an exercise physiology major from Tonganoxie; Jennifer Whalen, 22, a communications major from St. Louis, and Kristin Black, 20, a Wichita junior majoring in business and minoring in French.

Most local businesses that sell the magazine will get their copies by mail on Tuesday.

But Osburn plans to pick up as many copies of the magazine as he can Friday morning, by driving to get them from his distributor in Kansas City, Mo., and have them on sale when he opens Friday morning.

“I was hoping to get 400 issues, but I was told that I could get as few as 72 and no more than 120 copies,” Osburn said.

“It’s very disappointing because I think I could have sold 400 copies this weekend. Between walk-ins and phone calls, I’ve had at least 60 inquiries today.”

Originally, when he had hoped to get 400 copies, some customers had asked him to reserve a copy.

But now that he’s been limited “I’m now telling them it’s first-come, first-served,” he said.

“This is by far the highest demand we’ve come across for an issue of Playboy,” he said.

As Osburn told another customer to return on Friday, he stressed to the customer the need to arrive early.

“Unfortunately, no matter how many people we please, we’re going to disappoint an equal number of people when we sell out by mid-afternoon if it takes that long,” he said.

Two other local stores plan autograph sessions with the local students when the magazines arrive on their racks next Tuesday.

Those sessions will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Jayhawk Bookstore, 1420 Crescent Road, and from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hastings Books, Music and Video, 1900 W. 23rd.
